Android Auto was designed to keep driving simple and safe, but many users want more functionality like YouTube streaming or screen mirroring. Sideloading allows installation of unofficial apps such as Car Stream, AAMirror, and Fermata Auto, bypassing Google’s restrictions. The process involves enabling Developer Mode on both the phone and Android Auto, then using tools like Android Auto Apps Downloader (AAAD) from GitHub.

While this unlocks features like video playback and web browsing, it comes with significant risks. Safety is a major concern—watching videos while driving is distracting and illegal in most regions. Malware exposure is also heightened, as sideloaded apps from unverified sources carry over 50 times more malware than Google Play apps.

Google plans to block unverified sideloading starting in late 2026, requiring developer verification. For most users, the standard Android Auto experience is sufficient. Sideloading should be approached cautiously, limited to trusted developers and used only when parked.
