The injury occurred early in the team's 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, when Rams linebacker Byron Young hit Dart from the right side, sending him into Josaiah Stewart. Dart suffered a heavy fall less than four minutes into the game on third-and-eight.

Coach John Harbaugh refused to confirm reports the injury is worse than the initial sprained medial collateral ligament diagnosis, stating an MRI is needed for clarity. Harbaugh said the team would reveal a timeframe after evaluation is complete. He expressed confidence in backup Jameis Winston to step in during Dart's absence.

The Giants also suffered further injuries, with Brian Burns spraining his left ankle and Andrew Thomas sustaining a lower-body issue. Wide receiver Malik Nabers dislocated his shoulder but popped it back into place. Despite the setbacks, Harbaugh emphasized the team cannot get discouraged, noting everyone deals with adversity in the NFL.
