Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte posted bail on Saturday for a criminal case accusing her of threatening to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., stating she fears for her own life. Accompanied by her lawyers, Duterte appeared at a court in Quezon City to pay 360,000 pesos ($5,750) for bail covering three counts of grave threats. The charges stem from allegations she made assassination threats against Marcos during an online briefing in 2024.

"I have documented threats and harassment since 2023. I fear for my children," Duterte said in a statement. "I do not feel they are safe if I am with them." She added, "I do not feel safe. I feel like they are going to kill me," without elaborating. The court issued an arrest warrant against the vice president on Friday.

Duterte, the daughter of detained former leader Rodrigo Duterte, is also being tried in the Senate impeachment court on charges including the alleged threat to the president's life and misuse of public funds. The legal pressure escalates tensions between the former 2022 election allies. The outcome could significantly impact the 2028 presidential election, as a guilty verdict by two-thirds of the Senate could lead to a perpetual ban from politics, while an acquittal might position her as the frontrunner to succeed Marcos, who is constitutionally barred from reelection.
