xMEMS Unveils World's Smallest Active Micro Fan

xMEMS Labs has introduced the XMC-1200, the world's smallest active micro fan, designed to address thermal challenges in AR, XR, and smart glasses. This µCooling chip enables slimmer designs by managing heat at the source, allowing for brighter displays, sustained processor performance, and improved wearer comfort.

The XMC-1200 measures only 46 mm² and, when paired with the Astra2 drive ASIC, consumes just 70 mW while reducing temperatures by up to 10°C at a 1W thermal load. This prevents overheating and throttling in compact wearables.

Peter Richardson of Counterpoint Research highlighted thermal management as a key bottleneck, anticipating that active cooling will accelerate the adoption of smart glasses with on-device AI. Mike Housholder of xMEMS stated that the XMC-1200 is the first active cooling device thin, quiet, and efficient enough for glasses' temple arms.

Engineering samples of the XMC-1200 are available now, with production readiness targeted for Q4 2027. The XMC-2400, already in mass production, is currently supporting xMEMS' initial glasses deployments.
