Wildlight Lays Off Devs After Highguard's 98% Player Drop

Wildlight Entertainment's free-to-play raid shooter Highguard launched in late January to an initial Steam peak of 97,249 players. That figure collapsed to a daily range of just 2,000 to 3,000 concurrent users within weeks. The game's unique concepts were overshadowed by a lukewarm reception and scathing "mostly negative" reviews.

Critics and players cited severe pacing issues, a dearth of in-match content, and oversized maps for small teams. A surprise launch with minimal playtesting or community feedback compounded the problems. Wildlight's attempt to salvage interest with a 5v5 mode update, while reportedly improving energy, arrived too late to reverse the exodus.

The commercial failure prompted immediate layoffs. A studio post on X confirmed developer cuts, while former level designer Alex Graner stated on LinkedIn that "most of the team" was let go, noting significant unreleased content. This suggests the layoffs were abrupt and not part of a planned restructuring.

Wildlight claims a core group will continue supporting Highguard, but the long-term content roadmap is now uncertain. The episode serves as a stark lesson in managing player expectations for a saturated free-to-play market, where a disastrous launch trajectory can trigger existential consequences for a studio within a month.
