Sony’s PS5 DRM: 30‑Day License Traps Digital Players

Sony quietly rolled out a new digital‑rights system on the PS5 that forces owners of digital titles to re‑authenticate every 30 days. Early reports suggested the move could lock players offline after a single failed check. After digging into forum posts, researchers uncovered a more nuanced approach.

The community‑led investigation, led by user ‘andshrew,’ compared two copies of the same game bought on separate PSN accounts—one before the change and one after. Findings show Sony initially grants a 30‑day license that lasts only 14 days, after which a permanent license replaces it once the 14‑day refund window closes and restores offline play.

Under the new scheme, the first 14 days act as a safeguard against the old loophole that let users purchase, steal a license via jailbroken hardware, refund, and continue playing offline. Once the license is validated online post‑refund, the system issues a perpetual key, eliminating the need for subsequent connections for any future game accesses.

Sony has yet to issue an official statement, and the lack of prominent notice on its website raises concerns about transparency. Players who cannot connect within the 14‑day window risk losing access to newly purchased titles, a reality that could reshape how digital purchases are managed on consoles for both consumers and industry stakeholders today.
