The OpenTools Open Printer is a new open-source hardware project designed as an alternative to expensive, proprietary printers. Its core philosophy emphasizes repairability, compactness, and longevity, utilizing off-the-shelf parts for easy maintenance. The printer supports paper sizes up to A3 and can also handle paper rolls.

Key features include refillable ink cartridges, no Digital Rights Management (DRM), and open-source firmware. The design files are published under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, allowing free use and adaptation for non-commercial projects. Non-off-the-shelf components are 3D printable, further enhancing repairability.

The Open Printer boasts resolutions of 600 DPI (black and white) and 1200 DPI (color). It is powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero W and a STM32 microcontroller, running the open-source CUPS print server for OS-agnostic compatibility. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB ports. A 1.47-inch TFT LCD and jogger wheel provide navigation. Pricing and crowdfunding details are forthcoming, though a working prototype has been demonstrated.
