Nintendo Weighs OLED Display for Switch 2

According to a South Korean display analyst, Nintendo is considering a Switch 2 with an OLED screen. Speculation has risen, but the company is still evaluating the financial feasibility. If it decides to proceed, development would begin late this year, with mass production aimed for the end of 2027 and a market launch in early 2028.

Samsung Display is likely to supply a rigid OLED panel, but the cost would be significantly higher than the current 1080p LCD. Rising NAND Flash and DRAM prices have already pushed Nintendo to increase the Switch 2 cost by about $50, effective Sept. 1. These extra costs could translate into a double- or triple-digit price hike for the OLED version, while the LCD version may also see price rises if supply shortages continue.

The original Switch OLED model improved visual fidelity with a larger OLED panel, but the Switch 2’s LCD already runs at 1080p, so OLED would mainly enhance colors without a resolution boost. Nintendo will decide in the coming months whether the added costs justify the upgrade.

The company’s decision will shape the handheld market next year.
