Midgar Studio Shuts Down Ahead of Edge of Memories Launch

Amid mass layoffs at Xbox and studio closures elsewhere, Midgar, the Nacon-owned studio behind Edge of Eternity, a turn-based JRPG adventure game, has officially announced it would be shutting down. Earlier this year, Nacon also shut down Spiders, the studio behind GreedFall, for similar reasons.

The closure comes as a result of a court-ordered liquidation, which follows the studio's failure to find a buyer. The announcement comes by way of a LinkedIn post by the studio's co-founder and current Nacon CTO, Jérémy Zeler-Maury, who says that "we worked until the very end to find a solution that could preserve both the company and the team," but after exhausting other alternatives, this is the only way forward.

Before the studio came on hard times, Nacon had revealed that Edge of Memories would launch in Q4 as a follow-up to Edge of Eternity. The upcoming game has talent from the likes of Nier Automata, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Chrono Trigger attached to it, but it remains to be seen how well it performs, because Edge of Eternity was hardly a hit, reaching just 736 peak concurrent players on Steam.

Jérémy Zeler-Maury wrote: "I founded Midgar in 2008, driven by the desire to create games that felt like us... What began as a slightly crazy idea became eighteen years of work... Midgar Studio ends here, but what we created will live on in our games, in our memories, and in everything each of us builds next."
