Microsoft's Cloud OS Dream: "Aion" Found in Archives

Microsoft once explored a radical operating system concept codenamed "Aion," designed exclusively for web-based applications and AI. This browser-centric OS, envisioned to run Office and third-party web apps within Microsoft Edge, aimed to eliminate local installations. It was built on a separate Win3 codebase, incompatible with traditional Win32 applications, prioritizing cloud functionality.

This approach would have enabled lightweight client PCs for businesses, reducing hardware investment. The OS natively integrated Microsoft's Copilot AI into its core shell, reflecting an early understanding of agentic AI's potential. However, the concept never materialized into a public product.

Microsoft's "Aion" OS ultimately stalled because the demand for a purely cloud-based system wasn't sufficient at the time. While businesses could benefit from reduced hardware costs, the critical need for local data storage and application execution remained a significant hurdle for widespread adoption.
