Microsoft Reinstates Copilot as Dockable Sidebar in Windows 11

Microsoft is reshaping its AI companion in Windows 11. A rolling rollout now places Copilot as a dockable sidebar, the layout first promised in 2024. Users can pin it left or right, and the desktop automatically resizes to accommodate. The move signals a shift toward tighter integration with system UI.

Returning to its original form follows a period when Copilot migrated to a separate app. The sidebar version blends more naturally with context menus, icons, and other elements, boosting visibility. For enterprises, Microsoft supplies two removal paths: a registry tweak or a group‑policy rule, giving admins control over the feature.

The sidebar tweak underscores how Microsoft prioritizes user experience over a standalone experience. By making Copilot a native pane, the company hopes to increase adoption and streamline workflows. For users who prefer a lean desktop, the registry edit offers a quick exit from the AI assistant.

Administrators can enforce the removal by editing the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsAI and setting RemoveMicrosoftCopilotApp to 1, or by navigating to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows AI and unchecking the Copilot app. These tools give IT teams decisive control over the AI experience.
