Microsoft Modernizes Windows 11 UI for Better Dark Mode

Microsoft is working to expand dark mode support across Windows 11 by modernizing its user interface framework. Despite Windows 11 officially having a dark theme, many UI elements, menus, and applications still lack proper support. The operating system currently mixes legacy Microsoft frameworks, creating inconsistency where daily operations encounter non-uniform interfaces.

This patchwork of UI elements includes web-based WebView2, React, and other frameworks alongside older components carried over from the Windows 7 era. According to Marcus Ash, who leads Microsoft's Windows Design and Research team, the company plans to transition its entire user experience to the desktop-only WinUI 3 framework. This overhaul aims to reduce application latency and improve the overall user experience.

When asked about dark mode support for Regedit, Ash indicated progress is being made but no specific timeline exists. The transition to WinUI 3 will create a more cohesive interface where dark mode truly applies everywhere, not just on some panels and the home screen. As Microsoft modernizes legacy system panels and dialogs, users can expect improved consistency throughout the operating system.
