Marathon adds cooperative Vault Breaker PvE mode

Bungie reacted to early Marathon criticism by adding co‑op tools, but player demand for pure PvE grew louder. The studio unveiled a mid‑season roadmap on June 23, promising several systems to reshape the loop. Among them, the Cradle Evolution System will let players reset progress for extra energy points and exclusive cosmetics. These changes signal Bungie's shift toward a more traditional looter‑shooter experience.

The headline feature, Vault Breaker, drops the extraction‑shooter model in favor of cooperative vault runs. Launching on July 21, crews, duos or solo players will descend into the Cryo Archive, battling stronger foes across sequential vaults until a final mysterious entity appears. Loot is left behind on exfil, except for new Vault Data currency. Each vault grants Vault Data, scaling difficulty and rewards.

Vault Data can be exchanged for upgrades to the regular kit and a specialized Sponsored Kit required to queue for the Cryo Archive. By stripping high‑value gear from the economy, the mode aims to keep Marathon’s loot market stable while rewarding progression. Mastering the final encounter unlocks a Runner skin. The update also adds profile stats and quality‑of‑life tweaks ahead of Season 3’s September 22 launch.
