Game developers are mounting fierce opposition to NVIDIA's DLSS 5, with industry figures like David Szymanski and Dave Oshry questioning whether AI-generated graphics are destroying game art. The technology, which uses machine learning to enhance visuals, has sparked controversy since its unveiling, with critics arguing it fundamentally alters the artist's intent and represents a departure from the original upscaling concept.

Oshry, CEO of New Blood Interactive, launched a blistering attack on NVIDIA, accusing the company of hiding generative AI behind the DLSS brand and calling it "Gen AI bullshit." He drew parallels to failed tech like 3DVision and PhysX, questioning whether DLSS 5 will suffer the same fate. The developer sarcastically asked why artists should create game art at all if AI can generate visuals based on "Instagram models and Epstein memes."

Szymanski, creator of Dusk and Iron Lung, added that DLSS 5's aesthetic changes make scenes look like "alpha chad Breaking Bad YouTube shorts" with excessive contrast. Both developers warned that features marketed as optional often become industry standards that games depend on, forcing consumers to accept AI-generated graphics whether they want them or not. Their comments highlight a growing rift in gaming between developers embracing and rejecting AI technology.
