DLSS 5 Modded Into Skyrim: Dramatic Lighting & Face Improvements

NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 in March to mixed reactions, particularly regarding changes to character faces. Though not officially released, an early-access build of NBA 2K27 contained a DLSS Neural Rendering DLL, believed to be a precursor. Modders quickly implemented this technique, with YouTuber PureDark applying the DLSS-NR mod to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The 15-year-old game's outdated character models see dramatic improvements: superior detailing, lighting, shadows, and facial structure in side-by-side comparisons. Overall lighting behavior is vastly enhanced, appearing nearly path-traced in some scenes. However, this remains an unofficial mod using a pre-release DLL extracted from a different game, so final DLSS 5 results may differ.

Questions persist about artistic integrity and developer control over the post-processing filter, but the Skyrim demonstration shows promising potential for neural rendering technology.
