The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has adopted Bluetooth High Data Throughput (HDT), a major evolution of the wireless standard that introduces faster data transfer, increased capacity, better energy efficiency, and enhanced reliability. Bluetooth HDT increases the maximum supported bit rate to 7.5 Mbps, nearly four times that of the previous Bluetooth LE 2M PHY, by introducing a new physical layer with robust modulation schemes.

The advancement addresses four key dimensions: faster data transfer for more responsive interactions and shorter sync times; increased capacity through improved spectral efficiency; better energy efficiency by reducing active radio time; and enhanced reliability across demanding operating environments. Neville Meijers, CEO of the Bluetooth SIG, stated the technology expands Bluetooth's role across consumer, commercial, and industrial markets. Joonsuk Kim, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics, emphasized that the combined improvements provide a stronger foundation for more capable products.

The first flagship application for Bluetooth HDT will be standardized premium wireless audio, expected to release in 2027. The technology will enable standardized lossless and high-resolution audio streaming, meeting growing demand for higher-quality wireless listening experiences.
