ASUS X870 Board Kills Ryzen 9800X3D & 9850X3D CPUs

A troubling new case has emerged involving an ASUS TUF Gaming X870-PLUS WIFI motherboard that appears to have destroyed two separate Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 7 9850X3D processors. The Australian user, UniverseWillDecide, reported their first build with the 9800X3D experienced random freezes and crashes, particularly with AVX2 workloads. After returning the CPU under Amazon's 30-day return window, they purchased the newer 9850X3D model during AMD's official launch period.

Initially, the replacement CPU worked without issues for several weeks. However, the system eventually failed again, leaving the owner with two dead processors from different production runs. The user suspects the motherboard's BIOS may be applying incorrect voltages to the CPUs, though they stopped short of directly blaming AMD. This incident adds to a growing list of compatibility issues between AMD's 3D V-Cache CPUs and various AM5 motherboards, particularly those from ASRock and now ASUS.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about motherboard-CPU compatibility in AMD's 800-series platform. While ASUS previously advised users to update to the latest BIOS revisions, this latest failure suggests deeper issues may persist. For consumers investing in high-end Ryzen 9000-series processors, these repeated failures raise serious questions about platform stability and the potential costs of hardware incompatibility.
