xAI's $7M Sound Wall Fails to Block Power Plant Noise

Neighbors in Southaven, Mississippi, are enduring months of constant noise from 27 temporary gas turbines installed by xAI without community consultation. The turbines, powering Elon Musk's AI ambitions, create a relentless din of roaring, popping, and high-pitched whining that residents describe as 'scary.'

To address complaints, xAI spent $7 million on a sound barrier wall, but neighbors say it barely muffles the noise. Local resident Taylor Logsdon called it the 'Temu sound wall,' noting it hasn't calmed her dogs, which remain unsettled by sudden booms and squeals. Videos show the turbines' continual jet engine-like hum persists despite the barrier.

The Safe and Sound Coalition, a nonprofit environmental group, has documented the noise issues and found city officials have no records of communications about the wall or noise exemptions. The group's efforts highlight transparency concerns as xAI seeks permits for 41 permanent turbines that could be nearly as loud while potentially increasing smog in the residential area.
