Volkswagen pauses US ID.4 production, inventory lasts to 2027

Volkswagen has halted production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. CEO Kjell Gruner called the facility a cornerstone of the automaker’s U.S. strategy, but the strategic shift signals a pause on current electric‑vehicle output while the company retools for future models in the near term.

Dealers still hold enough stock to satisfy orders through 2027, according to VW. The refreshed ID.4s boast higher power and better efficiency than earlier versions, giving consumers a short‑term buffer despite the production freeze. This inventory cushion buys time for the brand to decide its next EV roadmap.

The move raises concerns about VW’s electric lineup in North America. Earlier this year the company scrapped the 2026 model year of its ID.Buzz minivan after sales fell short, effectively ending imports. With no ID.4s rolling off the line, the automaker risks a gap in its EV offerings.

VW hints that a next‑generation ID.4, possibly rebadged as an ID.Tiguan, is in development for the region, but details remain under wraps. Until that vehicle arrives, the brand will rely on existing inventory while competitors continue to expand their electric portfolios, leaving shoppers with limited new‑model choices.
