Verizon Expands Phone Unlocking Restrictions

Verizon has expanded its device unlocking restrictions, now imposing a 35-day waiting period for customers who pay off their phone installment plans online or through the My Verizon app. Previously, this delay only applied when using a Verizon gift card, but the policy change means most early payoff methods now trigger the waiting period.

Customers seeking immediate unlocks must visit a Verizon corporate store—representing just 20% of all Verizon stores—with a secure payment method like cash, chip credit card, or contactless payment. The policy change appears retroactive, as Verizon still lists the effective date as January 27 despite implementing the expanded restrictions after that date.

The new restrictions create significant barriers for customers wanting to switch carriers, especially for those who prefer online or app-based payments. While Verizon claims the measures prevent fraud, they effectively lock customers into the network for an additional month regardless of how long they've been with the company or how close they are to completing their payment plan.
