Taylor Farms Recalls Lettuce Amid Cyclospora Outbreak

Taylor Fresh Foods is voluntarily recalling all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico due to an escalating outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a stomach bug linked by federal health officials to lettuce from certain Taco Bell restaurants. The FDA traceback indicated a specific independent farm, representing less than 1% of the U.S. iceberg lettuce supply, as the potential source. This recall impacts 27 states. Previously, the FDA warned against consuming shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 1,644 cases and is investigating over 5,100 more nationwide, it's unclear if Taylor Farms' produce is linked to outbreaks in other states. The CDC stated that shredded lettuce sold in grocery stores or served in other restaurants is not affected. Taco Bell has also voluntarily removed suspected lettuce from its supply chain nationwide.

Michigan has been the hardest hit, with 5,002 cases and 102 hospitalizations. This is not the first time Taylor Farms has been connected to a cyclosporiasis outbreak; a similar incident in 2013 sickened 631 people. The company was also linked to a 2024 E. coli outbreak.
