Rubik's WOWCube: High-Tech Puzzle at $399 Challenges Classic Design

The Rubik's WOWCube attempts to modernize the classic puzzle with electronics and screens, but the $399 price tag and simplified 2x2 grid may alienate purists. Unlike the traditional $10 Rubik's Cube, this device features eight modules with processors, gyroscopes, and accelerometers, offering games beyond the basic puzzle.

While the smaller grid makes solving easier for beginners, it disappoints hardcore puzzlers who can't tackle the traditional 3x3 configuration. The WOWCube includes 15 games like Pac-Man-style White Rabbit and Ladybug, plus apps for weather and notifications. However, its reliance on battery power and complex controls sometimes frustrates users.

The WOWCube's technology adds versatility but also complexity to a beloved simple concept. Navigation requires double-tapping and shaking motions that can be unreliable, and the device occasionally experiences screen glitches. Though Cubios' companion app enables new downloads via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, privacy concerns arise from mandatory activity tracking permissions.
