Quantum Computing Crafts Half-Möbius Molecule in Breakthrough

IBM researchers and the University of Manchester collaborated to synthesize a *half-Möbius molecule*, a complex structure with a twisted orbital configuration. Using a quantum algorithm, the team manipulated electrons in a 13-carbon ring with chlorine atoms, achieving a configuration where electrons occupy peripheral orbital positions after a single loop. This breakthrough, detailed in a paper co-authored by IBM, pushes the boundaries of molecular design and quantum computation.

The molecule’s instability required extreme conditions: it was stabilized at cryogenic temperatures and isolated on a salt crystal surface. While not immediately practical, the work demonstrates how quantum tools can explore previously inaccessible chemical configurations.
