Poland's energy grid hit by novel wiper malware

Poland's electric grid was targeted by a previously unseen wiper malware, likely deployed by Russian state hackers, in an attempt to disrupt renewable energy communications. The attack occurred in late December but failed to cause any operational blackout, according to security firm ESET.

The malware, dubbed DynoWiper, permanently erases data to destroy systems. ESET attributes it to the Sandworm group, known for destructive attacks on behalf of the Kremlin, including the 2015 Ukraine blackout. The incident coincided with the 10th anniversary of that historic cyberattack.

While the attack's success was limited, it underscores persistent threats to critical infrastructure. Russia's history with wipers like NotPetya and AcidRain shows a pattern of using custom malware for geopolitical disruption. The failure could indicate strong defenses or a deliberate, limited message to avoid wider conflict.
