Michigan Pushes to Block Chinese‑Badged Cars from U.S. Roads

Michigan lawmakers introduce a bill that would bar Chinese‑badged vehicles from entering the United States, citing job protection and national security. The proposal mirrors existing commerce rules but adds a stricter authorization process for any allowed imports.

The legislation requires Customs and Border Protection to compile a list of prohibited models within 90 days and to enforce strict transparency and congressional oversight. Senators Stevens and Slotkin argue that Chinese automakers supply cars that act as mobile surveillance platforms.

Slotkin warns that such vehicles can geolocate drivers, record full‑motion video, and map sensitive sites, including military bases. He cites China’s recent lifting of a Tesla ban after compliance with data‑sharing laws, a move that mirrors U.K. and Polish restrictions near defense installations.

If passed, the bill would prevent even short‑term visits by fully finished Chinese cars, tightening the U.S. automotive supply chain and limiting consumers’ access to a growing segment of connected vehicles.
