Luxury EVs Ditch Leather for Eco-Friendly Textiles

European luxury EVs like the BMW i7 and Audi A6 are embracing textile interiors made from sustainable materials, but these options remain unavailable in the US market. The trend reflects a growing shift toward eco-friendly alternatives to traditional leather, with automakers experimenting with wool, recycled plastics, and synthetic fabrics.

Gordon Murray, the legendary designer behind the McLaren F1, once proposed wool interiors for a four-door supercar, citing weight savings and performance benefits. His vision is now materializing in vehicles like the BMW i7, which debuted with a premium cashmere wool interior in 2022. European markets are seeing more of these innovations, while US buyers are left with synthetic leather alternatives.

US automakers cite customer preferences for easy-to-clean materials and concerns about clothing clinging to fabric seats as reasons for the limited availability of textile options. However, with growing environmental awareness and the success of these alternatives in Europe, it's only a matter of time before American consumers demand similar choices in their luxury vehicles.
