Lola T70S: Plant Fiber, Volcanoes, Seawater

Lola Cars is producing continuation models of its iconic T70 race car, dubbed the T70S. These new builds will be available in FIA-homologated historic racing configurations or as UK road-legal T70S GT versions. While echoing the original T70's 1960s design, the T70S incorporates innovative material sourcing, particularly for magnesium components.

Traditional magnesium production is carbon-intensive and pollutive. Lola, however, is extracting magnesium directly from seawater using electrolysis powered by solar energy. This method significantly reduces the carbon footprint and general pollution associated with obtaining the metal. Lola executive innovation director Matt Faulks highlighted this process as a cleaner alternative to conventional smelting.

The use of such advanced, sustainable material sourcing in a historic racing continuation car suggests a broader trend in motorsport. As manufacturers explore ways to reduce environmental impact, even in heritage builds, it indicates a shift towards greener manufacturing practices across the automotive industry. This approach could influence future racing technologies and consumer vehicle production.
