The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee approved a NASA authorization bill, including an amendment focused on the International Space Station (ISS). The amendment directs NASA to evaluate storing the ISS in a safe orbit after its decommissioning in 2030. This move reflects ongoing discussions about the future of the ISS.

The current plan involves deorbiting the ISS over the Pacific Ocean. The amendment, supported by bipartisan members, doesn't challenge the 2030 end date. Instead, it prompts an engineering analysis on preserving the station for potential future use. This stems from the massive investment made in the ISS.

Rep. George Whitesides emphasized the ISS's historical significance and the need to explore all options. NASA already contracted SpaceX to develop a deorbit vehicle. The agency is looking for ways to extend the lifespan of this crucial piece of infrastructure. The bill must now pass the House, Senate, and await presidential approval.
