A comprehensive study reveals groundwater levels can recover after decades of decline, offering practical solutions to a global crisis. Analyzing 67 documented cases worldwide, researcher Scott Jasechko identified three primary strategies that successfully raised water tables. Alternative water sources like China's massive South-to-North Water Diversion Project or Osaka, Japan's river water use proved crucial in 81% of cases. Policy and market changes, including fees and bans on pumping, drove reductions in groundwater use in half the examples, such as El Dorado, Arkansas. Artificial recharge, intentionally adding water to aquifers, succeeded in nearly half the recoveries, sometimes through leaky infrastructure. Recovery isn't without complications, however, as rising water tables can cause flooding, land movement, and pollution issues.

The study emphasizes that combining strategies is often necessary, and the time to see results varies significantly.
