Google Vids Adds AI Video, Music Tools

Google is expanding its Vids video editing platform with powerful AI capabilities, integrating its latest Veo 3.1 and Lyria models. The update brings directable AI avatars and automated music generation to the tool, which Google positions for creating animated flyers, business presentations, and greeting cards rather than professional filmmaking.

Veo 3.1 promises improved realism and consistency, generating eight-second 720p videos. The service operates on a tiered system: free users get 10 generations monthly, AI Pro subscribers receive 50, and AI Ultra plan members (personal or enterprise) get 1,000 videos per month. The Lyria music model creates 30-second or three-minute tracks without requiring lyrics input—users simply describe the desired vibe.

The timing is notable as OpenAI scales back its video generation efforts. Google's aggressive push into consumer AI tools continues, though the practical applications remain limited to short-form content. While the technology shows promise for quick creative projects, the quality and length constraints suggest these tools are still evolving rather than ready for serious production work.
