Despite widespread AI hype, Google Research's analysis of Gemini usage indicates that AI is currently serving primarily as a complement to existing work, rather than comprehensively replacing human tasks. Researchers found that only 21 percent of all work-related tasks met a minimum threshold for AI integration, termed "Gemini tasks." For a significant portion of occupations (29 percent), not a single relevant work task achieved this threshold, suggesting minimal AI impact so far.

Another 30 percent of occupations showed less than a quarter of tracked tasks with significant Gemini usage, implying humans still handle the majority of their job components. Only in 3 percent of occupations was Gemini regularly consulted for at least three-quarters of relevant tasks. Jobs like software quality assurance analysts, human resources specialists, and document management specialists were among the most impacted.

Overall, AI appears useful for specific tasks within occupations but does not comprehensively perform the work currently done by humans. The study observed that 86 percent of Gemini interactions involved cognitive tasks, while interpersonal and manual tasks were underrepresented. Researchers suggest this complementarity may persist even with future AI advancements.
