Google beefs up safety tools to scrub personal info

Google has upgraded its privacy protection tools to better detect and remove sensitive personal information from search results. The 'Results About You' feature now scans for passport numbers, driver's license numbers, and Social Security numbers, expanding beyond its previous capabilities. Users can enable these new protections through the tool's settings by providing partial ID numbers.

For passport and Social Security numbers, only the last four digits are needed, while the full driver's license number can be submitted. Google says this information helps its system identify and remove pages containing your personal data from search results. The company emphasizes that while it cannot delete content from the internet entirely, removing it from search results significantly reduces visibility.

The non-consensual explicit imagery (NCEI) tool has also been streamlined for faster reporting. Users can now access it directly from Google search results' three-dot menu and report multiple images in a single request. Google has added proactive monitoring for new instances of reported explicit content, with alerts sent to users when matches are found. These updates come as AI-generated explicit content becomes increasingly prevalent online.
