The Royal Canadian Geographic Society (RCGS) has released the first images of the Quest shipwreck, the polar exploration vessel that Sir Ernest Shackleton used on his final voyage.

The ship sank in 1962 and has now become a thriving marine ecosystem, though the RCGS notes the wreck is in worse condition than initially anticipated. These images, published in Canadian Geographic magazine, offer a first look at the vessel over 60 years after its loss.

The Quest was originally intended for Arctic exploration but was refitted for an Antarctic expedition after Canadian government support was withdrawn. The ship received upgrades including a new deckhouse, a heated crow’s nest, and advanced charting and deep-sea sounding equipment. Shackleton fell ill and died aboard the Quest in 1922 before reaching its planned destination.
