When Discord announced plans to verify ages using facial estimation, hackers targeted Privately's systems within days. The attacks, which Privately CEO Deepak Tewari described as intense but ultimately unsuccessful, tested whether the on-device technology could withstand real-world probing. NIST recently certified Privately's system as accurate within 1.94 years when tested on millions of images.

Discord delayed its age-verification system indefinitely, acknowledging it "got it wrong" and vowing transparency about partners. While Privately claims its FaceAssure technology never sends personal data off devices, privacy advocates like the EFF remain skeptical. They argue that age-check technology fundamentally compromises privacy regardless of where processing occurs, warning that legal mandates for age verification could restrict anonymous access to online content.
