Coal Plant Emergency Order: Plant Not Even Running

A coal plant in Centralia, Washington, has been ordered to remain operational through mid-June despite already being effectively offline. The Department of Energy issued an emergency order under the Federal Power Act to keep the TransAlta Centralia Coal Plant running, citing concerns about grid reliability in the Northwestern United States.

This plant was originally scheduled to close last year and convert to natural gas generation. The latest order extends an earlier winter mandate that was set to expire yesterday. The Department of Energy has used similar emergency powers nationwide to prevent coal plant closures, framing these actions as necessary for energy security.

However, data from the Environmental Defense Fund reveals the plant's actual contribution has been minimal. According to Energy Information Administration statistics, coal generated just 8 megawatt-hours in January and February - roughly equivalent to what residential solar panels produce in eight months. This suggests the plant is being kept online purely for backup capacity rather than active generation, raising questions about the necessity of these emergency interventions.
