Ilya Lichtenstein, who pleaded guilty to laundering 120,000 stolen bitcoins from the Bitfinex exchange in 2016, is now out of prison and seeking a cybersecurity job. He wrote on LinkedIn that his past actions were a "terrible idea" that upended lives and misused his talents.

Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, were arrested in 2022. He cooperated with the government, helping recover assets and assist on crypto cases. He noted his 60-month sentence and time in harsh jails, where he studied math. His cooperation mirrors paths taken by other reformed hackers like the late Kevin Mitnick.

Now on home confinement, the 38-year-old says the challenge is regaining community trust. He believes his adversary mindset can help stop future billion-dollar hacks. His case highlights a recurring industry question about whether convicted hackers can be redeemed in a field that demands high trust.
