Lautaro Martinez has expressed full support for Argentina teammate Julian Alvarez amid his failed transfer attempt from Atletico Madrid this summer. Alvarez made a public transfer request during the 2026 World Cup to force a move away from the Spanish club, with Barcelona and Arsenal also interested in the former Manchester City forward. However, Atletico refused to negotiate a deal, forcing Alvarez to remain at the Metropolitano.

Martinez revealed he sent Alvarez a message showing his support, citing their shared position and national team competition. He stated the situation is not easy for his friend but respects the decision lies with the club president. Alvarez was whistled and booed by Atletico fans in his season debut and missed training citing illness before the window closed. Martinez wishes him well, hoping he continues to show his brilliance, calling him one of the best players in the world.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone said he hoped the episode served Alvarez as a learning experience and would do everything to make him feel important on his return. Alvarez came off the bench in a 3-0 league defeat at Athletic, his first appearance since the transfer window shut.
