La Liga side Valencia have appointed former Mexico coach Javier Aguirre on an initial deal until the end of the season. The agreement for Aguirre to take over at Mestalla includes an option for him to remain in charge for a second season.

Aguirre, 67, replaces Carlos Corberán, who was sacked last week after Valencia failed to win any of their opening five league games. Valencia have since beaten Alavés before losing to Real Sociedad, climbing off the foot of the table with four points from seven fixtures.

Aguirre spent the last two years in charge of Mexico, overseeing a round-of-16 exit to England at the World Cup. Following elimination from the tournament, which Mexico co-hosted with the United States and Canada, he was replaced by Rafa Márquez as part of a succession plan already in place.

As well as Mexico, Aguirre has coached the Japanese and Egyptian national teams, with extensive experience in Spain. Valencia will become the seventh team he has managed in the country following spells with Osasuna, Atlético Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés and Mallorca.
