Stefon Diggs scored his first touchdown as a Washington Commander during Sunday's season opener against the Eagles, but his post-score celebration — hugging the goalpost — resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that cost Washington 15 yards.

Trailing 17-15 with 9:59 remaining in the fourth quarter, the penalty forced the Commanders to settle for a 48-yard extra point by Drew Stevens, cutting the lead to 17-16. Coach Dan Quinn said the team would have gone for two had Diggs not committed the flagrant foul. A failed 2-point conversion with 1:01 left then sealed Washington's 24-22 loss.

Diggs, who finished with four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown, took full responsibility. "I've got to be better," he said. The NFL banned goalpost hugging before the 2014 season, and Diggs was previously fined for the same infraction in 2017 while with the Minnesota Vikings.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels accepted blame for not reminding the team about the two-point attempt. "That's on me," Daniels said. Diggs called it "quarterback s---" and added, "I want to win bad. Finally after we weren't clicking for a little while it got to me."

Coach Dan Quinn defended Diggs, calling him "a real competitor" who "knows better than that" but praising his fight and passion.
