The 36-year-old reached the milestone with a hit to center field against Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez, becoming the second player in franchise history to reach 2,500 hits behind Hall of Famer Craig Biggio's 3,060. "It means a lot, obviously," Altuve said. "It's a big number, you know, 2,500."

Every Astros player and coach in the dugout climbed to the top step to applaud Altuve, who also received congratulations from Phillies infielders Trea Turner and Luis Arraez. Altuve, who finished 1-for-4 in an 11-7 loss, is the 103rd player and 11th primary second baseman to reach 2,500 hits. He is a three-time batting champ (2014, 2016, 2017), the 2017 AL MVP, and a two-time World Series champion.

Altuve and Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers are the only active players with 2,500 career hits. To reach 3,000, Altuve would likely need at least three more seasons. "Let's get one hit at a time," he said.
