Angels sale to Kroenke: Impact on team, Trout, MLB

After 23 years, Arte Moreno is selling the Los Angeles Angels. Stan Kroenke, whose Kroenke Sports & Entertainment owns the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, the NBA's Denver Nuggets and the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, agreed Tuesday to acquire a controlling interest. Under Moreno, MLB's first Latino majority owner, the Angels made the postseason six times but haven't played meaningful October baseball since 2014, despite Mike Trout. The team also let Shohei Ohtani walk after 2023 to the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kroenke, 79, is worth approximately $24.3 billion and owns eight sports franchises, including Arsenal F.C. His teams have won two Super Bowls, two Stanley Cups, an NBA title, an MLS Cup, two NLL championships, and a Premier League title. Rams fans see him as a godsend, but St. Louis fans and Arsenal fans have criticized him.

If the Rams are evidence, Angels fans should be excited. Kroenke traded up for Jared Goff, hired Sean McVay, and built SoFi Stadium. The Angels need that boldness. Olney says the Angels will be in a better place because Moreno had become one of the least effective owners, often hijacking negotiations for expensive sluggers like Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols, and blocking a trade of Ohtani.

What this means for Mike Trout's playoff hopes remains uncertain, but the change in ownership could signal a new direction for the franchise and MLB.
