Pete Golding was hours from taking another job when he tried to convince Lane Kiffin to stay at Ole Miss, calling him a 'f---ing idiot' if he left for LSU. Golding had joined Ole Miss in 2023 seeking stability for his family after leaving Alabama, where Nick Saban was upset with his departure. As Kiffin wavered, athletic director Keith Carter prepared a search, but Golding realized no outsider could maintain stability.

He declared his interest in the job to Carter. After Kiffin officially left on Nov. 30, Ole Miss named Golding head coach amid roster turmoil and player departures. Despite the chaos, Golding led the Rebels to a CFP win over Tulane and a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia before losing to Miami by one play.

Now opening the 2026 season against Louisville, Golding aims to establish his own identity while living in Kiffin’s former Oxford home. Carter said Golding 'just fits' with the fan base, who are excited to have him as their guy. Two playoff wins showed the program can succeed beyond its former coach, but distancing from Kiffin’s shadow remains a work in progress.
