Gemini macOS app adds iMessage send and read integration

Google's latest Gemini app update for macOS prepares local iMessage integration, following the app's Windows launch last week. The new Connected App, @messages, lets users "Read, search, and send messages in Apple Messages." It can send messages to contacts or phone numbers, read recent conversations, unread messages, and search message history, aiding context by looking up conversation information. Example prompts include sending a message to John with "Running 5 minutes late!" or searching Messages for dinner reservations.

Limitations include no group participant management, scheduled messages, file or photo attachments, tapback reactions, or image generation within workflows. The integration appears in Settings > Connected Apps after updating to version 1.116.5.889, though a server-side component is currently missing, with @messages not yet recognized in the prompt box. Recent updates also added a File Providers extension for right-click "Add to Gemini" in Finder, plus Images, Videos, and Daily Brief to the side panel.
