Sanjeev Gupta has successfully delayed an Australian court appearance after submitting medical reports citing a heart condition that would make long-haul travel to Sydney and prolonged cross-examination adverse to his health. The steel tycoon was scheduled to testify in the New South Wales Supreme Court regarding the collapse of Greensill Capital, which had financed Gupta's steel empire. Grant Thornton, administrators of the UK financing business, argued that Greensill creditors have rights over Infra Build, an Australian steelmaking business owned by Gupta-controlled companies.

The trial has been rescheduled to mid-November after Gupta's lawyers presented medical records related to his heart condition. The case follows Gupta's Australian operations remaining cash-generative until last year when Whyalla steelworks was seized over unpaid bills and alleged under-investment. Other former GFG assets, including a coal mine in New South Wales and a manganese smelter in Tasmania, have also been liquidated.

The Whyalla Steelworks administrators recently revealed 600 jobs would be lost with plans to restart the blast furnace abandoned while pursuing a sale of operations.
