West Ham Takeover: Sullivan and Kretinsky Raise Stakes

The battle for control of West Ham United took another twist as former chairman David Sullivan, who denies historical sex abuse allegations, increased his stake to 40% while Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky became the largest shareholder with 46%. The move followed Vanessa Gold’s decision to sell her 25% stake, which was acquired under West Ham’s pre-emption process after Amanda Staveley, backed by an American investor, attempted to buy the shares. Sullivan, who made his fortune in the pornography industry, stepped down as director in July to avoid club disruption but remains a major shareholder.

The Football Regulator is investigating whether Sullivan is fit to own such a significant portion of the club. West Ham, relegated last season, now plays in the Championship, facing reduced broadcast revenue despite parachute payments. Kretinsky expressed honor at becoming the largest shareholder, emphasizing the responsibility.

The club has faced on- and off-pitch turmoil, including the scandal surrounding Sullivan’s past allegations dating to the 1980s and 1990s.
