Insolvent Australian builder Bathla Group secured stopgap funding to stay afloat for two weeks as it works to repay creditors owed A$3.4 billion ($2.5 billion). Administrator Teneo agreed to emergency financing with five lenders, estimated at A$4 million, to continue construction on projects tied to participating lenders while seeking longer-term funding. Construction on other projects was suspended Monday, halting work for about 213 staff.

The crisis highlights risks in Australia's private lending and real estate sectors, particularly after the central bank raised interest rates three times since February. Bloomberg Intelligence analysts warn Bathla's collapse risks derailing the government's target of 1.2 million housing units by June 2029. Unsecured creditors hold A$130 million in debt, while secured lenders represent A$3.1 billion.

ASIC Commissioner Simone Constant flagged "extraordinary complexity" at a parliamentary hearing in Sydney, expressing concern about retail investors among private credit lenders. ASIC is working with Bathla, administrators, and financial crimes agency Austrac to trace where funds have gone.
