Indonesia will form a new body to oversee land reform and settle related conflicts in a bid to address longstanding problems that have plagued plantations, mines, farmers and indigenous communities. Officials passed the Agrarian Reform Law that places the new body directly under the President and gives it powers over implementation, supervision and conflict resolution.

Lawmaker Iman Sukri announced the decision during a plenary hearing at parliament in Jakarta. The move aims to resolve decades of land disputes that have affected multiple sectors including agriculture, mining, and indigenous land rights.

The new body's direct placement under presidential authority signals the government's seriousness about tackling entrenched land conflicts. With broad powers over implementation and supervision, it represents a significant structural reform to Indonesia's land governance framework.
