Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a joint-British transfer record £125m. The deal takes City's summer spending to a Premier League record £458m, surpassing Liverpool's £415m from last year, though City have also generated around £300m from player sales. Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record £107m.

The 25-year-old Argentina international had been keen to join Real Madrid earlier this summer but the Spanish club ruled out an offer. He was booed by Chelsea fans during pre-season and was left out of recent match squads after reportedly asking to leave. In an open letter on Instagram, Fernandez said the decision had been difficult and that Chelsea would "always be in my heart." Chelsea set a deadline of 17:00 BST on 14 August for offers of £120m or more to end uncertainty before the 2026-27 season.

Fernandez worked with City manager Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, who is keen to reunite after losing several midfielders. "I could not be happier to be here," Fernandez told City's website. This is City's second transfer record in two months following the £116m signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in July. Chelsea's summer sales, including Nicolas Jackson to Aston Villa (£65m) and Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest (£50m), are expected to exceed £400m, a Premier League record.
