Lee Holloway, born in California in 1981 and raised in Cupertino, grew up surrounded by technology through his father's work at Apple. Display exceptional strategic thinking from an early age, winning a middle school chess tournament on a whim. Holloway demonstrated programming talent while at Monte Vista High School and worked as an engineer at HomeWarehouse.com before attending UC Santa Cruz, where he majored in computer science.

He cultivated spatial awareness and logical thinking skills to visualize large-scale system structures. Through Professor Arthur Keller at UC Santa Cruz, Holloway met Matthew Prince, who hired him on the spot after recognizing his work. During Prince's anti-spam venture Unspam Technologies in Park City, Utah, Holloway lived in Prince's basement and became Chief Software Architect, co-founding Project Honey Pot, an open-source community project tracking web spammers that still operates today.

When Prince returned to California, Holloway joined him in developing a new venture. After listening to Prince's passionate explanation of a threat monitoring and blocking service, Holloway declared, "That's interesting, let's do it!" and immediately agreed to join. Holloway co-founded Cloudflare and created its foundational technologies including Anycast and same-IP access mechanisms.

However, he was forced to step down due to a serious brain disease (FTD). This article explores the technological achievements he left behind and the tragedy of the illness that came to light.
