CSS-Tricks Stuck in Limbo After Digital Ocean Silence

CSS-Tricks, the influential web development publication, sits inactive again with no communication from owner Digital Ocean. Acquired in 2022, the site operated until February 2023 when Digital Ocean fired its staff. After a year of dormancy, lead editor Geoff Graham was rehired in June 2024 and revived operations. Now the publication faces uncertainty once more as Digital Ocean has gone silent.

The situation contrasts sharply with Digital Ocean's recent $3,000,000 donation to Omarchy, a collection of scripts and configurations led by David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH). According to DHH, the deal moved from initial contact on X to finalization in days. Meanwhile, Geoff Graham reportedly attempted to secure CSS-Tricks' future for months without response.

Digital Ocean has also ceased $50 monthly payments to GNOME and Flathub infrastructure. The author, a former CSS-Tricks contributor, argues this reflects misplaced priorities — funding a configuration project over the foundational open-source projects it depends on, and over the writers of Digital Ocean's own publication. With few quality web development publications remaining, losing CSS-Tricks would significantly damage the ecosystem.
